An Open Letter to Friends, Students and Supporters of Inhale Venice

from Micheline Berry

Dear Friends…

Happy Solstice! Winter in my North American home; Summer in my South American home.

There is something about the Solstice that brings out the contemplative in me. Something about how, for a moment of time, the brightest day of the year in one part of our shared globe is simultaneously accompanied by it’s darkest night elsewhere. This time of the year always gives me a sense of having a momentary glimpse beyond the veil into the breathing universe of things; endings and new beginnings entwined in life’s embrace. What a year this has been! So much of everything…  beauty, birth, change, death, new beginnings, more change, resiliency, grief, resolution, trust, breakdowns and breakthroughs! It is in this spirit that I write you these words.
A month and a half ago it became apparent to me that INHALE VENICE, the Yoga, Art & Culture project I spearheaded last May, could no longer be housed at The Rose Room because of increasingly frequent class cancellations and maintenances issues caused by outsourced rentals. Our last class there was December 24th. We are forever grateful to Thomas Elliot and the whole team at The Rose Room for the transitional incubator they have provided us since last December when our studio of 15 years suddenly closed. We needed this time to, well, Inhale ;), regroup, dream, conjure and figure out what we wanted to do together as a collective moving forward. This past year gave us that very necessary time to build our project, make alliances and solidify our relationships.

On behalf of all of us at INHALE VENICE, we thank our students from the bottom of our hearts for your love, support, presence and encouragement, through thick and thin. Mad love, respect and gratitude to the many teachers, donors, support staff and artists who generously give their gifts, art, energy and resources to this yoga, art & culture project. It is an honor to collaborate with such a thoughtful, diverse, talented, intelligent and seasoned community of humans.

New Beginnings…

The response since first notifying our community a month ago has been nothing short of a mind-blowing, hope-arousing thump to the heart. From many loving messages of support, to several of you stepping forward with offers of investment into a new Venice space, to several offers of partnership. What is clear is that our INHALE VENICE collective is strong and committed to staying together through change and the many iterations of our collaboration. What is also clear is that our mission to create a community-driven Yoga, Art & Culture program that gives back hits home with many of you. Here is what has evolved.

After many conversations with our senior teachers and advisors, we are so excited to inform you that we’ve decided to partner with Santa Monica Yoga to provide a brick and mortar home for Inhale Venice weekly classes, workshops, trainings, cultural events and social outreach! We've accepted Bruce Bair’s generous offer to join the weekly schedule at his gorgeous, community-based yoga studio founded in 2001. Many of our senior Inhale Venice teachers including myself, Hala Khouri, Denise Kaufman and Tracee Stanley will immediately continue offering weekly classes, workshops and trainings there beginning the week of January 2nd as our permanent Santa Monica base. Other Inhale Venice senior teachers will also be joining our weekly schedule as well in March 2017, schedule permitting.

Additionally, Santa Monica Yoga is partnering with Inhale Venice to provide a brick and mortar home for our expanded offerings our workshops, trainings, art/culture series & social outreach programs with world-class visiting teachers and artists. We are honored to be joining the Santa Monica Yoga Family including local veteran teachers Julian Walker, Nancy Goodstein, Kyra Haglund, Steve Jones and many more!

Moving forward into 2017....

While nurturing our Sanmo home base at Santa Monica Yoga, Inhale Venice will also be focusing on...

1) Supporting the community where there is need, including local direct-action non-profits in the Los Angeles area by connecting financial resources vis-à-vis subsidized yoga & meditation classes offered by Off The Mat™ approved teachers as well as art workshops offered by local artists to pre-vetted organizations;
2) Supporting our core group of teachers and artists with website listings/links and newsletter announcement to their ongoing offerings: local classes, retreats, trainings, online offerings, and/or exhibitions; as well as offering teachers referrals to potential private clients and partnerships;
3) Supporting our students with online classes in partnership with Udaya Entertainment.

4) Lastly, in addition to our long-term commitment to growing our Santa Monica Yoga alliance, we are also in the development phase of a creating an INHALE VENICE cultural center in Venice proper. (More on that later as that evolves). However, the current Venice real estate market is most definitely a mitigating factor at the moment. But as Venice localvores and badass dreamers, we will keep our antennae alert for an affordable Venice space.

Again we thank each and every one of you for your love and support for this past year. It’s been quite a ride! We wish you a beautiful holiday and Happy New Year! Please do not hesitate to reach out should you have any questions or ideas.

Big Love & Mad Gratitude,

Micheline & All of Us Behind the Scenes at Inhale Venice
